Book Summary: SF Author Stanley G. Weinbaum died from cancer at 33, in December 1935. Short though his career was, his scientific imagination, smooth characterization, and humor completely revolutionized the field, and profoundly influenced his contemporaries. Among his many imitators was English writer John Russell Fearn. Although Fearn's own distinctive work was very popular, he wanted to increase his number of acceptances by writing under pseudonyms--Thornton Ayre and Polton Cross--with a change of style imitating Weinbaum! These exciting and highly entertaining pastiches, first published in such magazines as Astounding Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories, are here collected for the very first time in book form, with fascinating historical background notes. The first of two must-have volumes for collectors, the second being VALLEY OF PRETENDERS. Great adventure reading from the classic period of the SF pulps!

Book Summary: 'His characters are marvellous, his insights wonderful ... You don't expect reality but you get something bigger and better' Ruth Rendell The Old Curiosity Shop was an instant bestseller that, even while it was criticized for its sentimentality, captured the hearts of the nation with its portrayal of little Nell Trent, who is thrown into a terrifying world when her beloved grandfather is unable to pay his debts to the loathsome Quilp. Alongside the pathos of the innocent, tragic Nell are some of Dickens's greatest characters: the ne'er-do'well Dick Swiveller, the mannish lawyer Sally Brass, the half-starved 'Marchioness' and the lustful Quilp himself, a creation of demonic power and cruelty. Book Summary: After being off the public agenda for a decade, the subject of bilingual education is once again at the center of public debate. Assumptions about the values of cultural pluralism and the rise of the "unmeltable ethnics" so dominant for the last twenty years have met a renewed public affirmation of the value of assimilation. In the United States "bilingual education" refers to programs that emphasize students' home languages and culture; teach academic subject matter in students' home languages; and introduce English into the curriculum at a deliberate pace. Students in such programs are generally members of immigrant groups and racial and ethnic minorities, and they usually come from lower-class economic backgrounds. Over the years, a number of different objectives have been advanced for bilingual education programs. In the 1960s and early 1970s, educators believed that these programs should be evaluated by students' linguistic proficiency and progress on standardized tests. More recently, advocates have promoted more subjective measures, such as students' enhanced sense of well-being and self-esteem. And yet others argue that the real goals of bilingual education should be social change and economic redistribution, and that programs should be evaluated by these long-range goals. The conference that gave rise to the essays in this volume was the first national symposium at which advocates and critics of bilingual education confronted each other's arguments face-to-face. These essays address the objectives by which bilingual education should be evaluated; the administrative practices by which programs are run; and the latest research findings on the effectiveness of bilingual education. Authors include Henry Trueba, Rudolph Troike, James Banks, Joshua Fishman, and Christine Rossell. "Learning in Two Languages "will interest educators and policy researchers, students of ethnic relations, and others concerned about the future direction of U.S. educational policies in this controversial area.

Book Summary: A masterful tale of a small town in the English midlands, and the hopes, regrets, and unrealized dreams of those who make it their home. In Middlemarch, George Eliot created a landmark of English literature as she incisively portrayed the drama and folly found in even the most simple and bucolic of precincts. Intertwined are the lives and stories of unforgettable characters such as Dorothea Brooke, whose desire for intellectual fulfillment leads her to marry the Reverend Edward Casaubon, who coldly refuses to let her follow her ambitions; Tertius Lydgate, a young doctor whose wife, Rosamond, sees him as a stepping stone to a greater place in society; Mr. Bulstrode, the wealthy town financier whose past corruptions return to plague him; and a menagerie of players large and small who find themselves both driven by their own motivations and held in stagnation by the will of others. As complex in theme as it is heart-wrenching and engaging, Middlemarch stands as a true classic of Victorian-era storytelling. Book Summary: "The last of the crew needs especial remark, Though he looked an incredible dunce: He had just one idea—but, that one being ‘Snark’, The good Bellman engaged him at once." ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876) is a nonsense poem by ‘Alice Adventures in Wonderland’ author Lewis Carroll. It describes the disastrous hunting mission by a bizarre group of characters, among these a butcher who can only kill beavers and a guy who forgot his own name. Gloriously nonsensical, this poem is bound to appeal to all fans of Alice. Lewis Caroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (1832-1898), was a British mathematician, photographer, and children’s book author. The idea for his most famous work, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', came to Carroll when he was on a boat with friends, having to entertain three young girls, one of whose name was Alice. Despite his success as a children’s book author, Carroll considered himself, first and foremost, a man of science and mathematics.

Book Summary: Chance is a novel by Joseph Conrad, published in 1913 following serial publication the previous year. Although the novel was not one upon which Conrad's later critical reputation was to depend, it was his greatest commercial success upon initial publication. Chance is narrated by Conrad's regular narrator, Charles Marlow, but is characterised by a complex, nested narrative in which different narrators take up the story at different points. The novel is also unusual among its author's works for its focus on a female character: the heroine, Flora de Barral. The narrators describe and attempt to interpret various episodes in the life of Miss de Barral, the daughter of a convicted swindler named Smith de Barral (though this character is famous in the world of the novel as a criminal, he may, at least at first, have been merely an incompetent banker). Miss de Barral leads a sheltered life while her father is prosperous, then must rely on the generosity of others, who resent her or have agendas for her, before she escapes by marrying one Captain Anthony. Much of the book involves the musing of the various narrators over what she and the Captain expected from this union, and what they actually got from it. When her father is released from prison, he joins them on ship, and the book heads towards its denouement.

Book Summary: This book examines the question of democracy in post-revolutionary Mexican society. Each chapter recuperates an event or particular historical sequence that sheds light on the relation between culture and sovereign exceptionality. Each moment or sequence stages a relation to language. In these speech scenes there is a disagreement between social actors (for example, disputes between peasants and intellectuals over words such as democracy, equality, freedom, proletariat, worker, revolution etc.). Democracy in this book is not just a type of Constitution or a form of society that politics affirms on a daily basis. It is the assumption and installation of egalitarian language. Democracy is therefore the momentary interruption or suspension of the police order.

Book Summary: Dorinda Vollmer has lived a life full of music, art, and poetry, which have sustained her in the happiest and the darkest of times. Her abiding passion has always been to live a life of purpose. With determination and courage, Dorinda often chose the more difficult path in life in favour of being true to herself. She answered the call to ministry in the United Church and chose to raise her son alone. The most difficult part of Dorinda’s journey was through her work as a minister, witnessing the struggle to survive faced by the people of the Roseau River Indian Reserve in Manitoba. Without Reserve offers a special perspective on the legacy of destructive historical and on-going government policies regarding First Nations people in Canada. It also unveils a lesson Dorinda learned along her journey: When the sky darkens, people search for light. In Without Reserve, the first part of Dorinda’s memoirs, those who find themselves at a crossroads will see that anything is possible. Her stories reflect a faith in the goodness of humanity and the ability of individuals to rise above personal suffering. Each person Dorinda has met throughout her life has deeply touched her heart and remains imbedded in her soul. In sharing her memoirs, Dorinda hopes the stories will touch people and empower them to empathize with those who struggle.

Book Summary: Recent interest in biological games and mathematical finance make this classic 1982 text a necessity once again. Unlike other books in the field, this text provides an overview of the analysis of dynamic/differential zero-sum and nonzero-sum games and simultaneously stresses the role of different information patterns. The first edition was fully revised in 1995, adding new topics such as randomized strategies, finite games with integrated decisions, and refinements of Nash equilibrium. Readers can now look forward to even more recent results in this unabridged, revised SIAM Classics edition. Topics covered include static and dynamic noncooperative game theory, with an emphasis on the interplay between dynamic information patterns and structural properties of several different types of equilibria; Nash and Stackelberg solution concepts; multi-act games; Braess paradox; differential games; the relationship between the existence of solutions of Riccati equations and the existence of Nash equilibrium solutions; and infinite-horizon differential games.

Book Summary: David Kellogg Lewis (1941-2001) was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to almost every area of analytic philosophy including metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science, and set the agenda for various debates in these areas which carry on to this day. In several respects he remains a contemporary figure, yet enough time has now passed for historians of philosophy to begin to study his place in twentieth century thought. His philosophy was constructed and refined not just through his published writing, but also crucially through his life-long correspondence with fellow philosophers, including leading figures such as D.M. Armstrong, Saul Kripke, W.V. Quine, J.J.C. Smart, and Peter van Inwagen. His letters formed the undercurrent of his published work and became the medium through which he proposed many of his well-known theories and discussed a range of philosophical topics in depth. A selection of his vast correspondence over a 40-year period is presented here across two volumes. As metaphysics is arguably where Lewis made his greatest contribution, this forms the focus of Volume 1. Arranged under the broad areas of Causation, Modality, and Ontology, the letters offer an organic story of the origins, development, breadth, and depth of his metaphysics in its historical context, as well as a glimpse into the influence of his many interlocutors. This volume will be an indispensable resource for contemporary metaphysics and for those interested in the Lewisian perspective.
