Book Summary: Based on the best-selling video game Fables: The Wolf Among Us! Bigby Wolf used to break every law in the books. Now, as the sheriff of Fabletown-New York City's magically concealed neighborhood of mythical, legendary and fairy tale figures-he is the law, and keeping the streets safe for Fables and Mundanes alike is his beat. So when a beautiful princess-turned-prostitute is decapitated on his watch, Bigby must unleash the wolf within to catch the killer. There's certainly no shortage of suspects. Was it Mister Toad, whose wild ride has brought him to the end of the road? Was it the Woodsman, who's been a pain in the axe ever since little Red put on a hood and rode through the woods? Was it Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, the towering twin goons-for-hire? Or maybe Grendel, the man-monster who's been causing trouble since before Beowulf could grow a beard? With the help of Snow White, his only friend, and Mayor Ichabod Crane, his longtime enemy, Bigby must crack the case soon. He may be the law, but some people can't wait to break him... Telltale Games' prequel to Bill Willingham's legendary series FABLES springs to comic book life in this first volume of FABLES: A WOLF AMONG US, written by Matthew Sturges and Dave Justus and illustrated by Steve Sadowski, Shawn McManus, Travis Moore and Eric Nguyen. Book Summary: Fairy-tale adaptations are ubiquitous in modern popular culture, but readers and scholars alike may take for granted the many voices and traditions folded into today's tales. In Fairy Tales Transformed?: Twenty-First-Century Adaptations and the Politics of Wonder, accomplished fairy-tale scholar Cristina Bacchilega traces what she terms a "fairy-tale web" of multivocal influences in modern adaptations, asking how tales have been changed by and for the early twenty-first century. Dealing mainly with literary and cinematic adaptations for adults and young adults, Bacchilega investigates the linked and yet divergent social projects these fairy tales imagine, their participation and competition in multiple genre and media systems, and their relation to a politics of wonder that contests a naturalized hierarchy of Euro-American literary fairy tale over folktale and other wonder genres. Bacchilega begins by assessing changes in contemporary understandings and adaptations of the Euro-American fairy tale since the 1970s, and introduces the fairy-tale web as a network of reading and writing practices with a long history shaped by forces of gender politics, capitalism, and colonialism. In the chapters that follow, Bacchilega considers a range of texts, from high profile films like Disney's Enchanted, Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and Catherine Breillat's Bluebeard to literary adaptations like Nalo Hopkinson's Skin Folk, Emma Donoghue's Kissing the Witch, and Bill Willingham's popular comics series, Fables. She looks at the fairy-tale web from a number of approaches, including adaptation as "activist response" in Chapter 1, as remediation within convergence culture in Chapter 2, and a space of genre mixing in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 connects adaptation with issues of translation and stereotyping to discuss mainstream North American adaptations of The Arabian Nights as "media text" in post-9/11 globalized culture. Bacchilega's epilogue invites scholars to intensify their attention to multimedia fairy-tale traditions and the relationship of folk and fairy tales with other cultures' wonder genres. Scholars of fairy-tale studies will enjoy Bacchilega's significant new study of contemporary adaptations.

Consuming Agency in Fairy Tales, Childlore, and Folkliterature

Author: Susan Honeyman

Publisher: Routledge

Genre: Literary Criticism

Book Summary: In this book Honeyman looks at manifestations of youth agency (and representations of agency produced for youth) as depicted in fairy tales, childlore and folk literature, investigating the dynamic of ideological manipulation and independent resistance as it can be read or expressed in bodies, first through social puppetry and then through coercive temptation (our consumption replacing the more obvious strings that bind us). Reading tales like Popeye, Hansel & Gretel, and Pinocchio, Honeyman concentrates on the agency of young subjects through material relations, especially where food signifies the invisible strings used to control them in popular discourse and practice, modeling efforts to come out from under the hegemonic handler and take control, at least of their own body spaces, and ultimately finding that most examples indicate less power than the ideal holds.
